Estoy de acuerdo con hhmdirocco, aquí en los estados sólo he escuchado los niños pequeños decir 'fishes' o 'fishEEs', porque los nativos no se dicen 'fishes'. Es una palabra que hemos expulsado de nuestro vocabulario. Well, don't say ALL of us. I still use the plural of collective nouns to distinguish when we speak of different varieties, classes, brands, etc. fishes, breads, beers, jellies, soups,.... However, the substitution of the singular form doesn't draw my attention. Neither fish nor fishes when discussing different varieties would register as inappropriate to me. Of course, freed, it would be incorrect not to use the plural when dealing with different varieties, classes, brands, etc., of those things. My point is that the word "fish" is both singular and plural, whereas the exclusively plural "fishes" is more obsolete. As you said, neither is inappropriate, but for every time in the US that you hear "fishes, " there will be at least 10 times that you will hear "fish" referring to the plural.

I ate 10 fish. I ate 10 fishes. Both are correct; I just think the latter sounds strange. As Nathaniel mentioned, it sounds very close to what my 2-year-old daughter and I say... "one fishie, two fishies, three fishies... " Your point is well taken, though, that we should not lump all of our compats into one identical group, but rather speak in generalities or of our own spheres.
